License plate game: There are a few car ride games you can play using the license plates of other vehicles on the road. Try finding plates that start with each letter of the alphabet. Or get creative by making up a phrase by using the plate letters as acronyms.
Scavenger hunt: It takes a little planning, but a scavenger hunt can be one of the best road trip games for kids. Prepare a list of common things you may encounter on the road or print a premade list off the internet.
Then, encourage your family to check off each item as you spot it during your travels. Rhyme: Test the vocabulary of your passengers with this game for the car. Start by having one person pick a word.
Then, take turns saying words that rhyme with it. The first person to get stumped or repeat a word loses the round. Then, everyone else asks them questions. See how long it takes someone to guess the right answer. Take turns reciting one line from a song. Then, see if others can guess the song name and artist. Quiet game: Tired of crazy car games? This one could give you a little peace and quiet. See how long your passengers can stay silent.
The first one to make a noise loses. Movies: This is one of the best car games for movie lovers. First, name an actor. Then, the next person names a movie the actor has starred in. Here comes the twist: The next player has to name a co-star from the same movie. This one will get tricky, so see how far your crew can make it. Just yell out every time you see a VW Beetle. People watching: On a road trip, you may be driving beside the same cars for hours.
Have some fun by making up a story about people in the vehicle next to you — the funnier, the better. Never have I ever: Start by having everyone hold up five fingers. If someone else has done it, they put down a finger. The last person standing wins. Spelling bee: This may not fall into the category of cool car games, but it can be played by passengers of all ages.
Say a word and let everyone try to spell it. Just be sure to have someone double-check the tough ones. Car bingo: Hunting for things to do on a road trip? Look no further than car bingo. Create a bingo board with a different type of vehicle in each square. Get the kids interested in the places we're visiting on our trip -- because that's one of the reasons we travel, right?! I search for games they really enjoy for example, Mad Libs are a big hit with us right now and fun pages like coloring or design printables. We also play the license plate game as a family every summer so that's a big one for us too!

I like to include a Kids' Road Atlas or map with the binder too we get ours free with our AAA membership -- this is great for map reading skills! Activity Idea: Have your kids highlight the route you're taking in the atlas and they can follow along as you drive. Younger kids might enjoy driving a Hot Wheels car along the route as you travel. Older kids will be intrigued to see what interesting places you might be passing en route.
Picklebums has these cute and open-ended Road Trip Drawing Prompts. Doodle Art Alley has a set of Summer Coloring pages that can be used individual or as a family coloring activity. For instance, if they chose to begin with T, then everyone else in the car must think of movies that begin with T, as in Toy Story and so on. In need of a few more fun car games to get you through the drive? For this game, you must name a series of objects or animals to look out for when on the road.
You can choose any number of things, from cows to road signs to yellow cars and more. Keep a tally of every object on the list that you spot. Whoever has the most points by the end of the road trip wins! This one can be applied to almost any subject. Into cars? Have the family come up with the top 10 favorite models.
